Algebraic Expressions: Understanding Variables and Constants
Many students entering Algebra 1 struggle with the basics: they confuse expressions with equations, misunderstand what a variable really means, or overlook the role of a constant. These gaps can make every new topic harder. That’s why building a clear foundation in algebraic expressions is so important. By learning how variables, constants, and operations fit together, students gain the confidence they need to succeed in Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and beyond.
What Are Algebraic Expressions?
An algebraic expression is a math phrase that can include constants (numbers), variables (letters that stand for unknown values), and operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. It does not have an equal sign.
Example:
5𝑥 – 17
Expression vs. Equation: What’s the Difference?
An equation includes an equal sign and shows that two things are equal.
For example:
5𝑥 – 17 = 18

What Is a Variable in Algebra?
A variable is a letter that stands for a number we don’t know yet.
Example:

It can change, and that’s why it’s called a “variable”.
What Is a Constant in Algebra?
A constant is a fixed number, and it does not change.
Example:

The 5 in front of 𝑥 is called a coefficient.
Example Problems: Algebraic Expressions
Example 1
Problem: Which of the following is NOT an expression?
- A. 𝟽𝑦 + 4
- B. 𝟹𝑥 − 2 = 10
- C. 9𝑚
- D. 𝑎² + 1
Answer:
The answer is B.B is the only one with an equals sign. It is an equation. The others are expressions.
Example 2
Problem: What is the variable in this expression?
8𝑎 − 12
- A. 8
- B. −12
- C. 𝑎
- D. None
Answer:
The answer is C. In 8𝑎 − 12, the variable is 𝑎. It represents the unknown value.
Summary: Keys to the Algebraic Expressions
- An algebraic expression is a math phrase without an equal sign.
- An equation shows two expressions are equal using an equals sign.
- A variable is a letter that stands for an unknown number.
