How to Introduce Your Child to Math Competitions
Sometimes, getting your child enthusiastic about math competitions can be difficult. Math is often seen as just a school subject. However, this feeling can be changed with the right attitude and approach! Here are five different ways to introduce your child to math competitions.
Math competitions can be a fun and enjoyable hobby for young students. Once a child develops a passion for math, problems turn into entertaining puzzles and learning new material becomes an exciting accomplishment. Participating in math competitions is also great for setting students up for a successful future in both mathematics and other STEM fields.
1. Allow Them to Be Creative With Problem Solving
Let your child explore new techniques and equations on their own. Math competitions actually allow students to think outside of the box and discover their own unique paths toward finding the correct answer.
Since students practice the same school techniques every day, they can become repetitive and boring. Allowing exploration of new methods both prepares them for math competitions and helps them have fun.
2. Find the Perfect Level of Difficulty
Children love a challenge — but it needs to be the right level. If the math content is too easy, your child will get bored quickly. If it's too difficult, they may become frustrated and quit.
Ensuring the math content they are practicing is equal to or a little bit higher than their comfort zone will increase the chances of them developing a passion for math competitions.
As a parent, offer words of encouragement and find helpful resources when the challenge feels like too much.
3. Provide Them With Fun Math Practice Activities
Switch up boring homework with fun math activities. You can find countless challenging math activities online and on YouTube. Board games like Monopoly or puzzle games like Sudoku are also beneficial.
These games and activities will hammer home the point that there is a lot of fun to be had through practicing math.
4. Have Them Join a Math Group or Club
Integrating your child into math learning groups helps them digest math material more easily. With multiple members in a group, students learn from each other and are introduced to techniques they didn't already know.
Many group members will likely also be competing in math competitions — having friends to compete with makes the experience much more fun.
5. Competitions for Your Child to Join
Math Kangaroo
One of the best competitions to start with. Designed for students in grades 1–12, it consists of a 75-minute single-round test. Many students who become math competition regulars in middle and high school begin their journey at Math Kangaroo.
AMC 8
Another great math competition for younger students. Students who perform well at the AMC 8 often go on to compete at the AMC 10, AMC 12, and even AIME.
