Learn on PengiAmplify Science (California) Grade 8Chapter 2: Investigating Potential Energy

Lesson 2: Storing Energy in Magnetic Fields

Key Idea.

Section 1

Defining the System

Key Idea

To track energy accurately, scientists define a system. For magnetism, the system includes the magnets and the magnetic field between them.

Crucially, potential energy is not stored inside the solid magnet (like a battery); it is stored in the magnetic field created by the interaction of the poles. The arrangement of the magnets determines the energy state of the field.

Section 2

Moving Against the Force

Key Idea

Energy is added to the magnetic field when an external force acts against the natural magnetic force.

  • Pushing repelling magnets together (against the push) adds energy.
