Lesson 4: Limiting Factors

Key Idea Ecosystem productivity is determined by the scarcest resource, known as the limiting factor . When multiple resources are required for a process, the one that runs out first dictates the limit of production.

Section 1

Hunting for the Limit

Key Idea

Ecosystem productivity is determined by the scarcest resource, known as the limiting factor. When multiple resources are required for a process, the one that runs out first dictates the limit of production.

Identifying the limiting factor requires comparing resource availability against needs. If sunlight and water are abundant but production stops, the cessation is caused by the depletion of the remaining essential input.

Section 2

The Carbon Starvation

Key Idea

A drop in atmospheric carbon dioxide to near-zero levels causes an immediate halt in productivity. Since CO₂ provides the atoms needed to build sugar, its absence makes the synthesis of Energy Storage Molecules impossible.

When photosynthesis stops due to a lack of carbon, the flow of energy into the ecosystem is cut off. This starvation at the producer level inevitably leads to energy shortages for all consumers.
