Lesson 6: Rounding Decimals to Any Place

In this Grade 5 lesson from Pengi Math Chapter 1, students learn how to round decimals to any specified place value by examining the digit to the right of the target place. Students practice explaining their rounding decisions using place value understanding and explore how rounding the same decimal to different places produces different results. The lesson also introduces rounding as a practical tool for estimation and checking the reasonableness of answers.

Section 1

Procedure: How to Round Decimals

Property

To round a decimal to a given place value, identify the digit in that place. Then, look at the digit immediately to its right.

  • If the digit to the right is 55 or greater (5\geq 5), add one to the digit in the rounding place.
  • If the digit to the right is less than 55 (<5< 5), the digit in the rounding place stays the same.

Finally, drop all digits to the right of the rounding place.

Section 2

Rounding the Same Number to Different Places

Property

The result of rounding a number depends on the place value to which you are rounding. A single number can have multiple rounded values, each corresponding to a different place value and level of precision.
