Grade 3History

People Arrived from Around the World

The United States is a diverse nation shaped by people who arrived from Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa — some by choice as immigrants, and others forced here as enslaved people. In Grade 3 social studies, students learn how waves of immigration and the forced transport of enslaved Africans built the diverse population that defines the United States today. This is covered in Chapter 2 (History) of Social Studies Alive! Our Community and Beyond. Understanding where Americans came from helps students appreciate the many cultures, languages, and traditions that make American society rich and complex.

Key Concepts

For a long time, people have moved to the United States from all over the world. Many of these immigrants came from countries in Europe, Asia, and Latin America. They traveled here hoping to start a new life.

Other people did not choose to come. Many people from Africa were captured and forced to travel to America as enslaved people.
