Property
When two fractions have the same denominator, we say they have common denominators. To create them, find an equivalent fraction by multiplying by a form of 1, such as ba⋅cc=bcac.
Examples
- To add 32+43, use 12 as the common denominator: 32⋅44+43⋅33=128+129=1217.
- To subtract 43−61, the least common denominator is 12: 43⋅33−61⋅22=129−122=127.
- To add 21+51, the common denominator is 10: 21⋅55+51⋅22=105+102=107.
Explanation
You can't add fractions with different slice sizes! To make it work, you must find a 'common denominator' so the pieces are the same size. A quick trick is to multiply the two different denominators to find a new one that works for both. This lets you add or subtract them fairly.
